English Community Round-up

Welcome to the news round-up for the English Community. Each week, we will keep you in touch with some of the most important threads within the forum together with some of the fun posts, so that you never need to miss them.

Our Community round-up is your weekly source for all that happens inside the PokerStrategy forums. If you missed something last week and you still want to be in touch with our community, here are some of the most important posts. This is just one of many community-related projects being set up.
elephant users at full tilt
Following the Full Tilt software update this week, several members experienced problems with using PokerStrategy Elephant's H.U.D. (Heads Up Display).
Such teething problems during poker platform updates are of course unavoidable sometimes, however the technical guys & girls at PokerStrategy are always on the ball and anyone still experiencing problems can locate a solution here.

IMPORTANT: This new version is still in the process of being fully tested, so it is currently only recommended for use by Full Tilt users who are experiencing problems and always back up your database before updating. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid losing data.
Thanks 6Wishmaster6 for the swift solution.

Community member rhinoneil found a solution to a similar problem on PT3 (PokerTracker 3) by downloading build number 5 of PT3, thanks for sharing rhinoneil.
Poker Blog of the week
This weeks blog of the week is "Lack of discipline is the key to failure!" by community member Wurble.

Wurble may, by self admission, lack discipline and be highly critical of his own play, but he is totally honest, realistic and willing to learn.
Sometimes the only way to learn is by making mistakes and recognising/learning from them. It's refreshing to find someone openly willing to blog their experiences, both good and bad, and asking fellow community members for advice.

We have a great community here, I just know that everyone will help, support and encourage Wurble onto great things. Good luck.
sample hand of the week
Fixed limit full ring this week for our sample hand. AKo from the small blind, provided by community member johnbeattie85:

Hand converted with online PokerStrategy.com hand converter:

Play hand

$0.25/$0.5 Fixed-Limit Hold'em (9 handed)

Preflop: Hero is SB with A, K.
4 folds, MP3 raises, CO calls, BU calls, Hero 3-Bets, BB folds, MP3 calls, CO calls, BU calls.

Flop: (13.00 SB) J, A, 6 (4 players)
Hero bets, MP3 calls, CO calls, BU calls.

Turn: (8.50 BB) Q (4 players)
Hero bets, MP3 raises, CO folds, BU calls, Hero calls.

River: (14.50 BB) 5 (3 players)
Hero checks, MP3 bets, BU raises, Hero folds, MP3 calls.

Final Pot: 18.50 BB.

Judge frzl: "nh. Standard and good imo. Easy value bets on flop and turn. After the turn raise you definately have to call ebcause he might be semi-bluffing, overplaying an A and even if he has a strong hands you are getting the odds to draw. River looks like an easy fold after the flush got there. Call 1 bet though."
new community member of the week
A big warm welcome to all new community members this week. Included amongst them is randomly chosen new community member of the week onepark who joined us on the 9th July. Welcome, it's good to see you.

We wish all our new community members every success and enjoyment with your poker and look forward to seeing you active in the forums soon.
Don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have and/or share your poker experiences, our members are really keen to help fellow poker players whenever and wherever they can.
performances of the week
Our community amassed winnings of $2,245.26 this week, well played everyone.

Congratulations to all our winners/other performances, which included:

  • radyan111 cashed in the 888 Sunday Challenge for the 2nd week running;
  • Dendra won a freeroll;
  • Multiple cashes for MrPavlos, Danne777 & alejandrosh;
  • curtis630 won a couple of SnG's.

Sorry I cannot name everyone each week, but I'll try to pick up a selection of different people each time. Keep posting those wins in this thread.

It is now very close to the end of the 'year' after TribunCaesar first set up this $1,000,000 challenge for us. We have until the 10th of August to achieve this target or get as close as possible to it, we are currently on a total of $593,281.74.
  spotlight on
Spotlight this week on community member radyan111, interviewed by EagleStar88.

PokerStrategy: Hi radyan111 welcome and thanks for agreeing to an interview for the community.

radyan111: With pleasure :).

PokerStrategy: Tell us a little bit about yourself

radyan111: My name is Pete, I'm 24 year old student from Krakow, Poland. I've just finished my 10th and last semester on the university and now I'm focusing on writing my thesis. I work in the trade-marketing department of the biggest brewing company in Poland. I have one younger brother, no pets, currently a single. Don't know what else you would like to know :). In the freetime I like to go out and ride a mtb in the summer or ski in the winter.

PokerStrategy: Is there a story behind the nickname, does it have any special meaning?

radyan111: I don't remember to be honest :). Probably there is and it has something to do with maths and 'this nickname is already taken' story a long time ago but I really don't know the details.

PokerStrategy: How did you first start in poker, were you introduced by someone?

radyan111: Yeah, I was introduced by a friend of mine, with whom I played some live games and who introduced me to PokerStrategy.com shortly after we ended up sharing the same flat. Been playing about a year.

PokerStrategy: How would you describe your poker style?

radyan111: Currently I'm experimenting a bit. When I started playing I was very results-oriented and followed the books with every step. At the moment however I have a bankroll that I'm comfortable playing with and I try to get more feel of a game by trying to play looser and implement some other strategies especially in my postflop play. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it does not - but due to the fact that I don't have enough time to play regularly I treat it like a good way of having fun, not as a way of earning lots of money fast.

PokerStrategy: Which variants are you currently playing and at what levels?

radyan111: I play NL25 shorthanded cash games on PartyPoker as my main site. In the last few days however I switched to 888.com for the additional starting capital I was offered by PokerStrategy.com and I play NL6 and NL10 there. Other than that, I deposited 50$ on Stars some time ago to clear the bonus playing only SNG's and it worked out as I was able not to lose it and just a few days ago I have finally been awarded with an additional 50$ :).

PokerStrategy: Nice. Do you ever play any live events, or are you mainly online based?

radyan111: It's been a long time since I played a live game. But even when I do it's always just another way to spend time with my friends - so we're not playing seriously usually.

We've came up with one really funny variant - when you get your cards dealed you don't look at them, but you put them face up on your forehead instead, so that everyone except you can see them. As a result, you don't know your own hole cards, but you know all the cards of your opponents. If you haven't tried it, I recommend you to do so - just be careful not to spill out your beer when rotfling. ;)

PokerStrategy: Ah interesting, maybe see it as a WSOP event one day ;). If you had to have a theme tune to enter a poker tournament to (like boxers when they enter the ring), what would it be?

radyan111: Tough one. Currently I say it would be Floorfillers Gladiator feat. Izzy - Now We Are Free (http://kasa1993.wrzuta.pl/audio/63Cp0WIUn5R/floorfillers_gladiator_feat._izzy_-_now_we_are_free). But it could change any time :).

PokerStrategy: Who are your favourite poker pro's and why?

radyan111: Daniel Alahi, John Juanda - they're just good and play their always-solid game. I might throw in Phil Laak for a mix.

PokerStrategy: What has been your biggest success/achievement in poker so far?

radyan111: I don't have one to be honest. I've never finished high in a big tourney. I guess keeping my 50$ alive playing tournaments on Stars is something I'm really happy with.

PokerStrategy: If you had the opportunity of playing a final table with a selection of people of your choice (doesn't have to necessarily be poker players, anyone past or present), who would be seated there with you?

radyan111: Alahi and Juanda to get a feel of how is it to play with the top pros. Robert Kubica (polish F1 driver who is said to outplay everyone in the paddock). My boss to make him believe that skill is a factor in this game. And Kylie Minogue cause she's cute. That would be a 6-max tourney.

PokerStrategy: Nice selection, just hope the seat draw is kind to you. Would be far better gazing across the table into Kylie's eyes as opposed to your bosses. :o) What do you like most about PokerStrategy?

radyan111: The people, who are always willing to help you with your game. And the feeling of a community on the boards and outside the boards.

PokerStrategy: Do you have a favourite blog that you are currently following?

radyan111: Unfortunately due to the fact that I'm trying to finish writing my thesis and my job I don't have much time for myself. And if I do I prefer to go out with my friends or just switch my mind off for a while. That's why I don't have as much time for poker and reading the forums as I would like to have. So I don't follow any blog at the moment. But I remember some good ones like DaPhunk's or Fongie's which I've been following for some time.

PokerStrategy: What advice would you give to our newer members just starting out in poker for the first time?

radyan111: Take the chance that PokerStrategy.com offers you and learn as much as you can - it really feels a way better when you outplay your opponent when you know what you're doing and why than if you just hit that ace on the river.

PokerStrategy: Is there anyone in particular from the community you'd like to give a shout out to?

radyan111: I'm not going to single out anyone - I just want to say thanks to all of you who make this place the way it is :).

PokerStrategy: Do you have any hobbies outside of poker?

radyan111: Sure I do, what were you thinking? :) Like I said earlier - mountain bikes, skiing, Stephen King's books. I started to learn to play guitar as well recently, but I guess it's not going in the right direction ;). Before poker I've been playing Magic: the Gathering for quite a long time. I was also involved in an EnemyTerritory gaming clan for a while.

PokerStrategy: Wow, you actually find time to sleep sometimes though right? If money was no object, what would you buy?

radyan111: Ford Mustang 1969

PokerStrategy: Well thank you for doing this interview , you've given us all a great insight into the person behind the nickname and we're very grateful for you taking the time out to talk to us today. We wish you continued success with your poker and look forward to seeing you in the forum and on the green felt soon.

radyan111: Thank you too. I'm really happy I'm the part of this community.

Would you like to be interviewed yourself one week or maybe you'd like to nominate a fellow member who you would like to know more about? Drop me a reply in the feedback thread and maybe your wish will come true.
  and finally
It is such a diverse community we have here, everyone is different, why not spend a moment telling us 5 random things about yourself. They can be interesting, unusual, funny, statistical, poker related or maybe life ambitions. They can be anything really, just keep them clean otherwise the moderators will:
  1. Tell you off;
  2. Slap your wrists;
  3. Edit your post;
  4. Name & shame you;
  5. Tell all your friends you can't sleep at night without your floppsy bunny cuddly toy beside you. ;o)
So of those who have already posted, which community members do you think the following apply to?
  1. Who owns two turtles?
  2. Who is the 2nd best Starcraft player in their country?
  3. Who has two degrees in Psychology?
  4. Who hated school but now works in one?
  5. Who supports a Slovenian Basketball Team called Košarkarski Klub Helios Domžale?

As always, this is your Community page and whilst I try to browse most forum threads looking for points of interest, it's of course not possible to cover everything. So go on, drop me some suggestions and/or your thoughts on what you would like to appear in this Round-up news item in the following feedback thread.
