PokerStrategy.com: Tell us how you got started in poker.
rodgethat: My first hand of poker was in Junior high school when a friend asked me over to play in a house game. I had no clue if a flush beat a full house, but after about five minutes of playing I was hooked.
I started reading everything about poker that I could and playing more and more. I lived in Canada and at the time the NHL was in a lockout so the only thing on TV was poker. I was super into hockey and when this happened poker basically took over for me.
I played freerolls and house games until I finally turned 18 where I starting playing live cash games. I won small at the time, but was just trying to my best to improve in any way possible. Finally one day I watched the NBC Heads-Up, it was the first time I saw durrrr play on TV. Like a true fanboy, I took my live roll and tossed it online lol.
PokerStrategy.com: So how did you evolve your online game?
rodgethat: I found training sites and poker forums shortly after and owe my poker growth to them. I mostly played cash games during the early times of my poker endeavours, but then one day I got a ticket to a 30k freeroll. I ended up winning it for 4k and was automatically hooked, I never got the type of rush/feeling from cash games as I did at MTTs.
The games were more fun to me than the grind of cash games so I started focusing my attention on them.
I wanted to build a basic knowledge and fundamentals for MTTs and I figured the best way to do that was to play SNGs. I played lots of 45,90,180 man SNGs, learning push/fold, ICM, Nash. Finally after about 30k games of them and studying I figured my game was ready for MTTs. That's where I am today, playing online MTTs from $11-$109 daily MTTs and playing live cash games.
PokerStrategy.com: So what do you attribute your success to?
rodgethat: I think what makes me a successful player is the love for the game and always wanting to get better. Over the last few years I have learned staying humble and competitive is key in poker.
