Poker clips - it's never too late to follow your dreams

Do you remember 2015 Belgian November Niner Phil Neuville? This old timer shocked us again! When he was 72, he played at the final table of the most important poker tournament in the world - the World Series of Poker Main Event - and now, in his 74th year he made the Top 50 of the Global Poker Index, because of the first prop bet his has made in his life!

He was trying to find the extra motivation for playing live tournaments, and he discovered that a bet with his friend would be a best way to do it. Did it work? Oh yes, it did very well! For more about this remarkable achievement you can read in Peter Fryer's article.

Before we talk a little more about prop betting, let's remember the 2015 WSOP performance made by this charming man.

Poker quiz - are you a born prop bettor?

Phil Neuville made his first prop bet in his seventies, so we can guess he wasn't a huge fan of this motivational method before that. How about you, are you a prop bettor?

Poker motivation method - Why prop bets are good for you

Post mortem proof that he was swimming with sharks

Some poker players - like Tom Dwan, Antonio Esfandiari or Bill Perkins are huge admirers of prop betting, others do it from time to time and for others it's just gambling and a waste of time.

It's debatable that prop bets about swimming in a pool full of sharks or those which involved peeing under the poker table are reasonable, but a prop bet which can motivate someone a little more to do something important for him is completely different.

Good prop bets for example can be about regular fitness training, healthy diet, reading books or learning something new.

They can also be poker related! One can bet about volume (play x hands/tournaments per month), learning curve (watching x poker videos per month) or EV (expected value) results over a big sample.

What are the positives of a prop bet?

    • higher levels of motivation
    • the fun factor
    • extra money for a winning a bet
    • doing something good for the community

What? "Something good for the community"? Yes, that's right! If you don't want to "gamble", and you just want some extra motivation and surplus money, you can choose a different paying method for a loser. In that kind of prop bet loser pays money to a charity. Basically that kind of prop bet is a win-win situation. Even if you lose, you don't feel so bad, because you know that you did something good.

So, how do you find idea of prop bets as a motivational device?
