Thin value betting is a way to exploit your opponents' wide calling ranges. Take a look at the following hand as an example:
$100 NL (4 players) 100BB effective stacks

Preflop: ($1.50) Hero is BU with
1 fold, Hero raises to $2.87, SB 3-bets to $8.70, 1 fold, Hero calls $5.83

Flop: ($18.40) (2 Players)

SB bets $10.20, Hero calls $10.20

Turn: ($38.80) (2 Players)
SB bets $21.00, Hero calls $21.00

River:

SB is an aggressive player who 3-bets 22% vs. button opens and barrels too much postflop.
