From a croupier to a Spin & Go pro
We had a chat with one of the first students of our Russian school at SpinLegends about going rom $3s to $30s and his non-poker hobbies.
Hi, Alexander! Thanks for finding some time to chat with us. Please tell us about yourself first.
: Hi, I'm 26. I live in a small town in Belarus. I studied to be a maintenance technician, then worked at a factory but not for long. After I had quit, I worked as a croupier. Back then, online poker was just entertainment. Now it's my only source of income.
How did you get into poker and when did you start playing online?
: I found out about poker when I was 17. I started studying it seriously three years ago.
What did you play before joining the project, and what results did you have before moving to Spin & Gos?
: I was a regular at midstakes Turbo SNGs at the $1-$3-$5 limits, played about 25k games with the average ROI of 7%. At the time, I only played Spins for fun.
Why did you decide to join SpinLegends?
: I had been thinking about moving to Spins for nearly two months and right at that time the Russian SpinLegends Team was created. I applied with my SNG results and was accepted.
At what limit did you start at SpinLegends and where are you now?
: I started at the $3 limit, now I'm at the $30s.
How was your journey to the $30 limit? How easy was it to pass through the $7s and $15s?
: Before the $30s, I had no problems beating them one after another. It all started after moving to the $30s. The start was bad, and I had many worries and fears.
What are your current results at the $30s and do you feel more confident there now?
: My current ChipEV is 55 for almost 1.5k games. It's not a big sample of Spins, so nothing is certain yet.
Tell us about your poker training. Which forms of learning proved to be the most effective for you?
: Daily coachings help very much. In general, all the information our school offers is very useful but, as our coach Stepan says: "Self-education is what matters most".
How has your understanding of the game changed over the last seven months with SpinLegends?
: My understanding of Spin & Gos, as well as poker in general, has greatly improved, but I understand there's so much more to work on. Probably even more than before.
What were the biggest multipliers you've had over the time with SpinLegends and did you win anything big?
: I saw a Ñ…100 multiplier twice. I lost the one at the $3 limit but won the other at $15s.
Has poker become more difficult since you started? What does it take to live off poker these days?
: It's hard to tell because I played at four different limits over the past seven months. I don't think the game changed, not much at least. In the end, you need to constantly improve, have a good bankroll and strong nerves.
What hobbies do you have outside of poker? How do you prefer to spend your free time?
: One of my favourite sports is karting. I even had two records on amateur tracks. The races are in the summer and it's hard to find time for them, but I'll try this year and, hopefully, the results will be good. I tried bungee jumping once, we jumped from a derelict water tower 35 meters high. It was so exciting! Before the jump, your knees weaken, heart racing... Will definitely try it again. I also plan to fly a Yak-52 as well as try flying in a vertical wind tunnel.
What are your future plans? How far up the limits do you want to go?
: I joined the school with one thing in mind: if I ever make it to at least the $15 limit, I'll be happy. But now the goal is different — to become a reg at the $100s.
What advice would you give to ambitious Spin & Go beginners, and what mistakes would you warn them about from the start?
: I'd tell them to get a coach as soon as possible, not to pay attention to short-term results and not to stay at the micros for too long.
