It is definitely topic worth discussing, I am also up for it. When I made jovial comment on his post it was because it is something for, I think, players with higher skill then me and that is not applicable for micro-stakes. But, I said, I can very easily be wrong. I'm for further discussion of any poker or football related matter!

WOW mate! I have read this yesterday and left it to read it again today... but I think it is to much for micro-stakes play... but maybe it is essential exactly for the micro-stakes play?! I'll read it it again when I take another break.![]()
P.S. I get what you are talking about, but it's to much for my fragile mind.![]()
It is not too much and is not related to any particular stakes whatsoever. What I actually think is that this subject is not available or taken into consideration for small stakes games as much as it should.
The fact that you must play better than you opponents (Skill Reciprocality) is more appropriate to certain stakes, or is it part of all levels of the game? It is part of it I think, when you are interested in winning of course. All that explanation was just to put that acquiring skill is essential, but not enough. I'll show why.
What I noticed is that what separates a skilled small stakes player from success are two things, namely (1) leaks and (2) tilt. A skilled player is the one who has studied and knows fundamental concepts related to starting hands, open-raising, 3-betting, value betting, post-flop play and so on. The fact is that he has knowledge (and supplying knowledge is the function of ps.com and many other sites and books out there), but knowledge itself must be applied in order to be converted into success. Success in poker is contingent upon the efficient application of knowledge. Remember that. Thus...
... the greatest obstacles for skilled small stakes players (which we can say are less experienced) are leaks and tilt. Leaks happen when what the player knows is being applied incorrectly, or when the player is playing the game with insufficient knowledge of it. Tilt happens when the player is playing below his optimal level, can be triggered by several causes and produce several different effects, but the fact is that when tilt happens, the player's actual skill is reduced to an extent that in some cases he might even play as bad as someone who never played the game before, or even as a spewy maniac.
You see the common point here? What I'm trying to put is that skill can actually be CLOUDED by tilt and leaks. I will not talk about leaks here, because I think that TILT is the most destructive of these factors in the short-term and also the one that needs the most effective action on the spot.
What is one's skill and knowledge worth if he is tilting so much that cannot apply his skill in the right way? This is the kind of self-analysis we need to do when we see that we have the skill but are not showing results as desired.
Without tilt one can make full use of his skill, and if his skill is really that great as he says, then success is almost instantaneous, even in the short-term.
This is were Tilt Reciprocality comes into play... ♠_cool: ♠_cool: ♠_cool:
That all make serious sense! But!!!
I was under BRM, struggling for weeks to create BR to be able to play with BRM (I played the smallest stakes, don't worry, I just had less then 25 smallest BI) and yesterday's "bad beat" killed me of. I have some left now (BI or two)... With 10BI bad beats are dangerous.
Just to put you in perspective, with a start of 3BI, I have created 5BI rake in like a week. I was grinding that much. I don't know, I think that's like enough, and I'm back where I started, even worse...
I'm not cursing my fate or something
I'm just saying. I couldn't hit almost anything on the board in yesterday's 1,5K hands and that is that... I remember only 2 tilts, maybe one and a half
(one was severe, but the other one not that much). Other severe losses 4 times in a row (not consecutive hands, but 4 times in like hour or two) I lost all-in QQ vs AK with QQ. According to statistics it should have been 2:2, but that I win on penalties :). Just that is 4BI.
P.S. I'll probably go of poker for a while, maybe not, but, I need to chill out.
I'll probably log in here to learn new stuff, but I won't be playing, even though I'll really miss it. So, I'll work on my leaks (which are probably severe, but I'm not aware of all of them).
ok, you always talk about bad beats, but were they really bad beats or did you just misplayed your hand and let your oponent suck out on the river?
get a tracking program (elephant) and start posting hands, so we can find your major leaks.
all other things were already said.
either you're not listening to the advices or you're not telling the whole truth, so as i said before best is to post some hands
I get you. I really did stuff everybody here said, but I'll start using that elephant to be sure. Where can I find that software? I would really like to hear about my hands. I just never used no software of that sort.
P.S. And as I said, I'M NOT WHINING, I'm no Phill Helmuth.
I'm aware that is major part of poker. And I really want to be sure if it was 100% bad beat (what is the use of me being sure, I'm biased of course), so I'll get that mammoth
and start posting hands.

http://www.pokerstrategy.com/software/9/ this is the link for the software...you can find instructions on how to instal etc. on the forums.
it will help you analyze your game, cuz you will able to look trough all the hands played, and not judge on some hands from what you remember.
good luck
is there any good tutorial for elephant? infact seems to be a nice tool!

I don't know, I think there is. But, I've just installed it. It works just fine, I just don't know if there is more to it then I'm getting right now (I'm not getting that much). I hope some of the more experienced users can help you.
I may have played this hand the right way, may have played it like a donk... that's why I MUST ask... and to try the Elephant out!
It's not a WOW-hand, but I would like to know, how would any of you play this one?

Preflop: Hero is BU with Q♣, J♣
6 folds, Hero raises to $0.06, SB calls $0.05, BB folds.
Everyone folded to me, great time to raise with a pretty solid hand (I've been playing tight at this table, so there is no reason for somebody to call me with absolute junk)
Flop: ($0.14) J♦, T♥, 7♠ (2 players)
SB checks, Hero bets $0.1, SB calls $0.10.
So, I see a good flop for me, rainbow, top pair with a solid kicker, so I normaly raise, a strong value bet. I've put him on a mid-low pocket pair.
Turn: ($0.34) 6♦ (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks.
When he called me, I was putting him that he slow-played a straight, or that he hit a set on the flop and also slow-played me. I know him for a calling-station, so I know, that I can't bluff him and that untill the showdown (if it comes to one) I won't be sure about his hand and I don't want to get more involved in this hand since the board is very drawy for a straight and with 4 different cards I find my top pair not so good and if I'm to make a strong value bet it would've been very expensive to see why he called. Also, he could've had KJ, it wouldn't be the first time somebody calls me with that. Still I'm thinking that he hit a set on the flop.
River: ($0.34) 8♠ (2 players)
SB checks, Hero checks.
With that 8 I know that despite his checking I don't want to get involved with no nine and I check.
Final Pot: $0.34
So, he shows his set of eights. It turns out he hit his wining card on the river as most of the calling stations do. I know NOW when I saw his hand that I was suppose to make a pot sized bet on the turn, BUT, that doesn't mean he would fold as he had gutshot straight draw and a third pair, and he's a calling station, so I think I've made this hand as cheap as it can be.
Thanks.
If I made that turn-pot-size bet as I do often, I would have endure bad beat I was talking about, as you and me both know he would've called. Also, you can see that he probably didn't have any plan, he just called, because if he had put me on AK or AQ he would've re-raised me on the flop and then I would fold or MAYBE go all-in, BUT the result would be the same probably. I would lose.

i recon you could have got away with firing again on the turn but then again he called you on the flop with pretty much trash even if he did turn a set you could (for all he knows) turn a straight. doesnt mean he would have folded tho so i recon checking is good cos it would appear as tho he cant get away from his hand and since you didnt know whether he flopped a set or was chasing/sat with a straight it seems risky. the turn card and river were quite scary... i think you played it pretty safe. thats my 2p but i'm by no means an awesome player lol think i've just figured out how to SLOWLY beat 2NL...
You should've hit a second barrel to protect against flush draw.
And never slowplay when you're not a lucky guy.

Is there something I should comment?! Unless he's with pocket rockets, in the worst show-case scenario, I'm with about 75% chance to win. So, let's include AA in the account, another 0,45% chance that he has them :). Let's say my favourable odds are 70%.
Flop: ($1.64) A♣, 5♣, 2♦
OUCH!!!Turn: ($1.64) 5♠
BLANK!!!River: ($1.64) 4♦ (2 players)
BLANK!!!

As I said, I HAD some penny change left and a great chunk of that penny change is now in that donk's BR!
@cpers
I was thinking about it, but if he was calling such a large bet on the flop because of backdoor flush draw... I don't know, I was giving him more credit then that. And I thought that I was already beaten so...
And, mate, I WAS NOT SLOW-PLAYING!!! I almost always protect my top set on a rainbow flop!!!
Oh yeah, and thanks for the guide!
I don't think you should minbet at the flop.
If you bet at the flop, and the turn.
And I'm the one holding pocket 8, I definitely would've fold at the turn.
Btw since you already use elephant now.
You should use hud to have a read about your opponent.

bet size on the flop was ok. you should have bet the turn also to protect from flush and strait draws, and to get value from hands like AT KT T9...but mostly to protect your hand and to show strenght and to get a free showdown at the river. and you can still get away from it if he bets the river, if he checks you check behind.
the KK hand...no need to comment that one...you never fold KK or AA preflop on micro-low stakes, especialy with 40bb. you played it right
if your BR is almost done...try depositing another $50 and try the BSS. you seem to be a decent player...and you think like a BSS player (from what i read)
edit: you think of the board texture, think about turn and river, and stack sizes...you should try BSS.
