Should we be concerned to exit Europe and try to get to US because of the rumors of the war in the East?

+0.20€ in SnG session. I still have the roll for the 0.20€ stakes; but soon I might drop below <200€.

Walked like 10km+ on snowy streets yesterday. Even though it is tiring I believe it is a really good training. Sometimes with family it is that, being in good shape is better than having a lot of money... Especially with kids, but not only, having a strong stamina to walk that extra 2km to bring something or carry something is very good.

I love walking in the snow. I strongly doubt that we'll get any this year.
It is already mid January, and we've only had a few days of overnight freezing.
Lately daytime highs have been around 10C in the pouring rain

Ditto. :f_love: Jogging too. We had a fair bit of snow in the last 1-2 weeks, but as of last night, it is gone. At least that should make the commute to work a little easier, now that my vacation is sadly over. :f_frown:

People freaking out led me to another 5km+ winter streets walk, this time with +pulled small carrier; even running, then giving 3-d platformer creation from scratch workshop in a private school. Winter run is awesome, such a fresh air! Strong feet save the day. Let's see which obstacles they throw at me tomorrow, should be easier but necessary buses could be removed again

I have food question. The company is now making about +350€/month; of which I try to give 300€/month to girlfriend, who said she will use it for repairing our summer house. Which would be like good food to buy/use? (I am vegetarian (no eggs, meat, fish))

Eggs are usually considered acceptable under a vegetarian diet. Did you mean to say you are a vegan instead (i.e. avoiding all kinds of animal products, also including milk and honey) or are eggs just an exception you make?

Depends on what exactly your priorities are. Are you looking for the most cost-effective food, the one that lasts the longest, the most nutritious food, or simply some tasty vegetarian/vegan dishes?

In any of those cases, I don't think you can go wrong with some pasta and rice. They are very versatile, have good nutritional value, and you should be able to buy a large amount of it for a fairly low price, which should last a long time if stored correctly. We have some specialized Asian grocery stores over here that sell big bags of rice for an affordable price. When I was a student, I always made sure to buy a 20kg bag of basmati rice from one of those stores.

If nutrition is your top priority, I think you won't get around some fresh fruit and veggies either, but they have a short shelf life. Having a reserve of some frozen veggies to fall back on should be a good idea, though. (I assume your summer house has a freezer)

Otherwise, if low-cost food is the most important thing, another classic favorite for students on a budget are those packs of instant noodles, though they often come with something like beef or duck flavoring, not sure if they are using actual meat for it, though. But either way, there are completely vegetarian versions available too, and while they only make one quick meal, they can usually be bought for under €1, so it's easy to stock up. Canned food like beans could also be a good cost-effective supplement.

Oats, yoghurt, fruit, veggies, lentils, chickpeas, beans, peas, cheese (expensive!!), tofu is not bad either, you cannot go wrong with potatoes or sweet potatoes (I personally, don´t like those!), whole grain rice and whole grain pasta are absolutely not wrong either. The best is always local, seasonal whole foods!

Super thankful for the replies! Will read/reply soon. Guru at Krishna temple says to avoid eggs and they call this diet vegetarian. (With milk products)

Yeah I better look that one up, the food thing. Last year was celebrating a lot, spent like 700€/year at Hesburger vegetarian; reducing the amount of eaten self-cooked food. But for family I always cook something, which is a bit easier. What I am now aiming at, is good balance of satisfied girlfriend, enjoying some alcohol-free beers at home, and cooking mostly: soups with lentils, peas; also many rice, buckwheat dishes, also potato dishes, carrots; tomatoes, tomato sauces, sometimes also burgers without or with bread; (vegan burgers cooked from rice+beans+flour or potatoes+flour or potatoes+onions+flour). With kids I cannot make the dishes with too much garlic onion mushrooms or too spicy.

The problem is, the family still gets on my nerves, no matter how hard I try to solve the cooking problem. They really enjoy my food, but also ask for extreme sports and deportations to my parents place (reduced recently), and sometimes extra food or service (repaired bicycle, helped rent of apartment). So this rhythm of theirs is sometimes not easy to cope with.

I have also started to enjoy coffee+milk (or cream) a lot, this one isn't the practice of the Krishna temple; but I really enjoy not eating at mornings and drinking coffee or two instead while working. I know it is a big addiction stuff, but I haven't managed to solve that - I need my own time and rest also from those other people.

But now I am thinking, to maybe find alternative to buying excessive amount of potato chips, and more healthy breaks maybe? Like when I go to walk I don't always grab a whole pack of potato chips any more this year. She says it isn't healthy.

Yes she just co-ordered eco 20kg rice from Germany, super nice, this is what women do here together. It gives some type of guarantee that we are together those days :f_biggrin: :f_drink:

Yes the cheese is already causing discussion; I am allowed to bring only the cheapest ones.

Technically, a vegan diet is vegetarian too, just with a couple of extra restrictions, so it's not wrong to call it vegetarian. Veganism implies vegetarianism, but vegetarianism does not imply veganism.

Prim mentioned to me privately that she considers cheese expensive too. Personally, I never especially noticed that, but there is always one brand of cheese on sale at a reduced price at my store, so I always buy that one. This also automatically adds variety, as I get to have a different kind every week that way.

I absolutely need my double espresso in the morning on a work day. I'm aware that it can be addictive, but I'm not sure if I could even safely drive to work without the caffeine kick, with how little sleep I typically get. I also happen to enjoy coffee in general.

I once tried non-alcoholic beer as an alternative to soda, but personally, I found it gross, it didn't taste like regular beer at all. Maybe your brands are better.

Snack foods tend to be a bit of a problem for me too, mostly roasted peanuts, but occasionally potato chips as well, though that's another thing I mostly buy on sale. I'm not sure if there are any healthier alternatives, I guess this is just a habit that requires some discipline. I often find myself munching on peanuts while I'm cooking, maybe I should store the bowl at another place, and not within easy reach. I also often seem to develop a craving for such snacks when I'm having booze on a Saturday night, which is usually the only time per week when I get to have alcoholic drinks.

I'm still doing my weekly vegetarian days, typically on Tuesdays, so I often fall back on those "fake meats". I mostly find them a little hit-and-miss, some are quite good, some are pretty bad. And some are initially fine, but have a weird aftertaste. I have yet to find a good vegetarian version of beef burger patties, the brands over here rarely even get the consistency right.

One very good version is an imitation of crispy chicken, I have often used it in tortilla wraps. I also like vegetarian versions of chicken nuggets, because honestly, their taste comes much closer to the McDonald's version that I remember from my childhood than most versions with real chicken, which makes you wonder what McDonald's has put in their nuggets all this time.

Btw, if you have good access to kimchi, here is an easy vegetarian rice dish I once made, which contains a link to the original recipe. You would need some gochujang paste, which may be hard to get, but once you have everything, it's quite simple to prepare. Probably not great for your kids, though, as it contains some spiciness and the kimchi may be better suited for adult tastes.

Thanks. My girlfriend makes quite good kimchi, I have forgotten what it means but it had some spices.
