What made you want to be a moderator?
la55i: I had been an active poster at the forums for a while and I liked helping the new guys. I thought it was super cool when I was offered this role. Now I’m basically the same guy posting as per usual but just with a different status.
Has being around so many hand discussions improved your game?
la55i: Absolutely! I have made thousands of posts to our hand discussion forums and I have learned a lot from those. Now that I don’t learn so much new stuff anymore, reviewing hands forces me to work on some tough spots and revisit some things I have learned before. It helps me make faster and more accurate decisions at the tables.
Does helping others improve your game too?
la55i: Yes. It’s pretty much the same thing than with hand discussions. Of course it is not as effective as if I would just focus on the spots I need to work on but it will definitely help.
Tell us about why you wanted to be a coach and how much work it took to get here?
la55i: When I was playing NL5 and NL10 I really considered getting a coach many times but it was a bit too expensive for a micro player. I have always liked helping others and when I finally completed my bankroll challenge and moved a couple of limits higher I started thinking about offering help for micro players with a reasonable price. I got the idea a couple of months ago and after that it took some work and a lot of planning. I got a lot of help and support from my fellow moderators and that made this process a lot easier.

What mistakes do you think players make at the stakes you currently coach at?
la55i: There are many common mistakes. Different players have different ones. Some don’t defend enough on the blinds, some like to call rivers too much. Then there are some spots like playing deep, playing in 3-bet pots or multiway that seems to cause difficulties quite often. Also, when to c-bet seems to be quite common theme at least on the hand discussion forum.
Do you think its more beneficial to learn from a player who is close to you in stakes? Is a NL10 player a better coach to a NL2 player, than a NL200 crusher, for example?
la55i: Maybe. Micro players probably know the player pool a bit better and they know what works there and what doesn’t. On the other hand, good poker players should be able to adapt very well so I believe most of the NL200 crushers could very well coach NL2 players. But could NL200 player offer something more than NL10 player? That of course depends on how good the NL10 player is but at NL2 there are a lot of basic things you have to learn first so I would say it doesn’t matter much from which one you get that help.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of poker?
la55i: Studying…
Just kidding. Studying is my main “work” and poker is the hobby I spend most of my free time with. When I do neither I usually hang out with friends and family, party and occasionally hit the gym. I also love photography but for some reason haven’t picked up my camera for a while.
