Goals vs Systems
Start your Monday with a lesson on why a System usually beats a Goal for getting what you want, from Dilbert creator Scott Adams.
We don't believe that watching a motivational video will suddenly make you a great poker player, consistent good habits and a commitment to learning will. However, it is undeniable that a short term boost of inspiration can start a positive snowball effect.
Every Monday morning at SpinLegends we share a 'Monday Motivation' video to get our players in the right frame of mind. Whether it's poker, chess, sport, business or study, the lessons are always universal, so we want to get you pumped in the same way.
"Goals are for Losers" says Dilbert creator Scott Adams. Instead he advocates for developing systems. A goal is a target you aim for and once you get there, it's done. A system is a behaviour that you can do every day. A goal might be to lose 20lbs, a system might be to go to the gym every day during your lunch hour. Systems are better than goals because they tend to help you develop skills and habits that mean you achieve more goals anyway by default.
We know in poker that having too many results based goals is a bad idea, especially with the variance involved. The goal to win a tournament, for example, is a very fleeting thing. Much better to have a system of reviewing your key hands from a tournament at the end of your session or studying for 30 minutes before you play. If you do this consistently you don't know where it will take you, but it will probably be somewhere good.
