How to play a monster draw without going broke

Maria Konnikova and the guys at the Chip Race discuss how to play a monster draw against an aggressive player.

If you are getting excited about Maria Konnikova's book this year, this should whet your appetite, as it demonstrates how deep a poker thinker she is despite never having played before the book project started.

In this hand she flops a monster draw in the Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open (SHRPO ) Main Event. She raises with it and is surprised to get reraised, so how to play this hand without going broke?

Our friends at the Unibet sponsored Chip Race podcast David Lappin and Dara O'Kearney are joined by Maria to break this hand down. It's not just about playing based on your equity, it's also about balancing your range when you lead, check/raise and check/call. As Dara and Maria explain in the video, it's a mistake to always try and get your money in with a big draw because sometimes we don't have fold equity and sometimes we don't even want our opponent to fold.

There is also a good discussion on river bluffing when you have a hand which blocks the hands you want to fold.

A new year and a new month lie ahead which means a new exclusive €10,000 rake race for our members at Unibet, the sponsor of The Chip Race.

This is one of the easiest races to guarantee a payout because it is played exclusively among PokerStrategy.com players, so the field is small. You can win as much as €1,300 but merely finishing in the top 75 will guarantee you at least €50.

If you are starting late it is worth knowing that last month in order to win the smallest prize of €50 it only required 738.6 StrategyPoints - that’s around €184 in rake for the month. That works out to around 27% rakeback on top of the usual benefits and bonuses at Unibet.

All you need is a PokerStrategy.com tracked Unibet account in January to win one of the following prizes:

Place Prize Place Prize Place Prize
1 €1,300 5 €500 11-15 €150
2 €1,000 6 €400 16-30 €100
3 €800 7 €300 31-75 €50
4 €600 8-10 €200 - -
