How to go your own way - Bankroll Management
1. Introduction

Minimize risks, maximize
profits -
Sometimes you have to descend
to ascend - Your personal roadmap
Some people can't handle money. As soon as they have some, it's
gone already. Their account is chronically overdrawn, and everything only works
out as long as the salary comes in regularly and no exceptional
expenses cross their path. Bad comes to worse when the salary is
canceled and major expenses stand in line. Bankruptcy looms.
You need reserve assets
In poker it isn't any different. Your bankroll is the poker
equivalent of your household budget. If it's overdrawn, everything is
over. Thus you never want to risk losing all your money. For that you
need reserve assets. After all, in poker it's not always smooth sailing. Sometimes you're hit by a streak of bad luck and lose one
hand after the other. Your poker balance has to be able to withstand
this.
On the other hand, you don't want to only play for safety. Your
goal is to quickly move up the limits, as more and more money is
waiting for you the higher you get.
Get rich, but safely please!
Even at first glance, you already notice a conflict: get rich, but
safely please! Balancing and combining these two goals is the
task of the so-called Bankroll Management.
PokerStrategy's bankroll management is a tried and tested approach
to safely yet quickly pass your way up the limits. It protects you
from bankruptcy or huge financial setbacks when you are hit by
unavoidable streaks of bad luck.
It tells you:
-
At which level of your bankroll
you can play a certain limit. -
At which level of your bankroll you should move down to a
lower limit to prepare for a renewed ascent.

2. Your roadmap for a secure
advancement
| ALWAYS COUNT IN BUY-INS |
For a healthy and sustainable bankroll management you should
always have a certain amount of buy-ins at your disposal to survive
longer periods of times in which you don't make any profit at all. A buy-in is the amount of money with which you sit down at a table, for
example on NL10 ($0.05/$0.10), where the big blind is $0.10, you
always buy yourself in with $2.00. Thus these $2.00 are one buy-in.
|
YOU NEED AT LEAST 30 BUY-INS |
For the highest limit you currently play, you should always have
at the very least 30 buy-ins at your disposal. You should never drop
below this number as it is the lowest margin. If you want to be on
the safe side, increase this number even more.
Therefore:
- If you only have 30 or less buy-ins of the previous lower limit, you have to step down a limit.
-
If you have 30 or more buy-ins of the next higher limit, you
may climb up a limit. Not earlier, and 30 is the lowest margin you
should never fall below.

4. Conclusion
Now you know that for a successful build-up of your poker career
you need to handle your money reasonably. Your bankroll is your
household budget for poker, so treat it that way. You cannot buy
things you aren't able to afford. Reserve assets are needed if you
are hit by a downswing. Only then you are able to weather it out and continue on your path to success.
Make sure to always keep in mind that bankroll management is the aspect
of poker in which the winning players are separated from the losing
players. Without bankroll management, even the best players of the
world don't have a chance. Always remember this.
Thus you have learned the complete short stack strategy.
Congratulations! If you haven't passed the quiz yet, you should do it
now with your newly gained knowledge to receive the $50+$100 starting
balance, which you can take to the tables along with your strategy.
Good luck!
