How to follow your path: the bankroll management

1. Introduction

Some people can't handle money. As soon as they receive some, it's already gone. Their bank account is chronically overdrawn. This is acceptable as long as their monthly salary is paid and no extraordinary costs arise. If their salary is cancelled or high costs arise, the person is in trouble. Bankruptcy is close.

There is no difference in poker. Your bankroll is your household budget for poker. If it's empty, it's empty and the game is over. You never want to be tempted to lose all your money. You need reserves. Things aren't always looking up in poker. Sometimes it hits you and you lose one tournament after the other. Your poker budget needs to be able to handle that.

On the other hand, you want to develop your game and rise through the limits as fast as possible, because the higher you get the more money you can win.

At first glance you'll notice that there is a conflict:
Gain wealth, but safely please! Combining these two goals and creating a balance is the job of the so-called bankrollmanagement.

The bankrollmanagement from PokerStrategy has proven to be successful on many occasions, to safely but quickly, move your way through the limits. It'll protect you from going broke or the big financial setbacks if you're encountering one of the inevitable downswings.

It shows you:

  • From which level of bankroll you can start playing the next higher buy-in.
  • From which level of bankroll you have to move down to the next lower buy-in level.

2. Your way to move up safely

For a healthy and lasting bankrollmanagement you should always have a certain amount of tournament buy-ins available to overcome phases in which you don't make any profit.

For the next higher limit you'd want to play, you should always have 30 to 50 buy-ins available. 30 is the lower boundary which you definitely shouldn't fall below. If you want to make sure, stick to 50 buy-ins.

IMPORTANT
To safely play a limit, you should have 30 buy-ins available of that limit.

Therefore applies:

  • If you have 30 or less buy-ins of the next smaller limit, you have to move down.
  • If you have 30 or more buy-ins of the next higher limit, you can move up in limits. Not earlier and 30 is the lower boundary which you shouldn't fall below.

The starting point of your poker career is the 50 Dollar which PokerStrategy made available to you as your starting capital. With this money you start in the limits of up to a buy-in of 1$. You can start playing any limit from the beginning as long as it doesnt exceed this. You'll probably start playing multiple tournaments and have times where you won't find enough free tables on one limit. In that case, you could take up a few tables from a lower limit.
